Where to see gorillas in Uganda or Rwanda

Gorillas in Uganda and Rwanda live in the tropical forests. In Uganda, you can find gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Five regions/areas also referred to as trailheads or sectors are available with fully habituated gorilla groups for tourists to track in Uganda.

Gorilla tours in Uganda involve on foot-walk adventure to see gorillas. You actively participate in the search for gorillas with the company of an experienced guide. The overall trek may take about 2-6 hours which includes an hour for up close with a group of mountain gorillas.

Gorilla sectors in Uganda for you to visit for gorilla trekking include Buhoma, Nkuringo, Rushaga, Ruhija, and Ntebeko. Each of these regions has habituated gorilla groups including Mucunguzi, Nshongi, Bikingi, Bushaho, Bitukura, Kyaguriro, Katwe, Oruzogo, Nyakagezi family, Christmas, Posho, and many others.

Gorillas in Rwanda reside in Volcanoes National Park in Ruhengeri. The park is lying in Northwestern Rwanda and stretches 160 sq. km. It is the most popular gorilla destination with families including Kwitonda, Amahoro, Hirwa, Sabyinyo, Susa A, Agashya, Karisimbi –Susa B, and others.

Valid Gorilla Permits

You can only be given a chance to engage in a trek to see gorillas when you have a valid gorilla permit. In case you plan to visit Uganda, you can book a gorilla permit at USD 800 per visitor (for all foreign nonresidents), USD 700 for all foreign residents, USD 500 for all visitors who fall under the category of Rest of Africa, and Ugandans plus other East African citizens are charged UGX 300,000.

Rwanda gorilla permits can be booked at USD 1500 per visitor and like Uganda gorilla trekking permits, you can use your permit only once a year.

Where to find lions

In Uganda, visitors can travel to savanna parks to see lions. Key places to find lions include Murchison Falls National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, and Kidepo Valley National Park. If you plan to be in Rwanda, expect to visit Akagera National Park –the only place to find not only lions but also other Big 5 game members.
