Posho Gorilla Group
Posho gorilla group is one of the gorilla families in Uganda. Unlike most of the gorilla family groups, the Posho gorilla family is still undergoing habituation process. The Posho group is found in Nkuringo trailhead/region/sector and is led by Magara silverback gorilla.
Nkuringo sector is the Southern gorilla tracking sector in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and once Posho gorilla group is officially opened for trekking, this sector will have 4 gorilla families. Posho group is comprised of 14 (fourteen) group members, all under the leadership of Magara silverback.
Besides Posho gorilla family group, Nkuringo also contains other gorilla families including Nkuringo, Bushaho and Christmas. Nkuringo family derives its name from Nkuringo region, and was previously led by Rafiki silverback gorilla. About 12 family members live in Nkuringo and this group is open to trekkers, also perfect for visitors in need for the most challenging gorilla treks.
This is Nkuringo’s oldest family to open for trekking. Trekking Nkuringo gorilla group was officially launched in April, 2004. This is after undergoing a 4-year habituation process. Originally, Nkuringo had a composition of 20 mountain gorillas and their numbers kept decrease as others left to join other groups or form their own families. Nkuringo’s oldest leader –Rafiki unfortunately was killed by poachers in 2020.
Bushaho –this gorilla family was opened for tourism recently adding to the original Nkuringo family group. Bushaho is led by Bahati silverback, comprising of 10 mountain gorillas.
Christmas –this family group is comprised of nine mountain gorillas, and is open for gorilla trekking. This group is currently led by Christmas silverback gorillas. An addition of Christmas on the list of habituated gorilla families didn’t only increase the number of families to be visited in Nkuringo or Bwindi, but gorilla permits thus availing more opportunities for tourists to take part in the memorable mountain gorilla trekking adventure on Uganda safaris.
Gorilla permits
When think of a gorilla tour to Nkuringo or any other sector in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, a gorilla permit should be a must to obtain. A single gorilla permit for Nkuringo gorilla trekking or Uganda in general cost USD 700 per person. If you want to have more time with mountain gorillas, there is an option of booking gorilla habituation permits each costing USD 1500 per person. Gorilla habituation experience is only carried out while in Uganda, and particularly in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
Best time of the year to travel
Gorilla trekking is an all year-round safari experience, but it is excellently done during the dry season. Each year, Bwindi records 2 phases of dry season –the long (June, July, August to September) and short dry months in this park occur from December, January to February.

Gorilla trekking requirements- Nkuringo gorilla expedition
To enjoy the most Nkuringo gorilla trekking adventure, consider packing right. Your packing list should consist of essentials such as valid gorilla permit, long-sleeved shirt, daypack, gardening gloves, rain jacket, a sweater, trousers, waterproof hiking boots, first aid kit or medical kit, a pair of thick socks, and others.
The other key sectors worth visiting for gorilla trekking in Uganda include Ntebeko of Mgahinga National Park; Rushaga, Ruhija and Buhoma. The gorilla families to explore aside from Nkuringo trailhead’s groups include Busingye, Mucunguzi, Katwe, Mukiza, Kyaguriro, Oruzogo, Kahungye family, Rushegura group, Kutu, Mishaya, Nshongi, Bweza and Bikingi gorilla families.
