Places to Visit in Uganda -Bucket-list Destinations

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park should be a must-visit on a Uganda safari holiday come 2024-2025. This beautiful tropical forest park is most popular for mountain gorilla trekking and also supports other diverse animal species.

Located in Southwestern Uganda, Bwindi National Park supports over 459 mountain gorillas and these share the same habitat with other species of wildlife including chimpanzees, and colobus monkeys.

20 habituated families of mountain gorillas reside within Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, a 331sq.km protected area. These are open for trekking in the 4 sectors –Rushaga, Buhoma, Nkuringo, and Ruhija region.

Each of Bwindi’s trailheads contains habituated gorilla groups and each group is visited by a maximum of 8 guests. Visiting gorillas in Bwindi like other destinations like Rwanda or D.R. Congo requires you to have a valid gorilla permit and every permit costs USD 700 per person.

Kibale National Park

Kibale National Park is the most visited Uganda safari park for chimpanzee trekking experiences or chimpanzee habituation experiences. Lying within Kabarole District, Western Uganda, Kibale Forest National Park contains over 13 primate species and include an estimated 1500 chimpanzees.

Created in 1993, Kibale occupies 795sq.km of land area and shelters not only chimpanzees but also other primates including the red-tailed monkeys, olive baboons, pottos, vervet monkeys, red colobus monkeys, l’hoest monkeys, as well as 375 species of birds.

The park offers more than chimpanzee tracking experiences, but also nature/forest walks, birding or bird watching, and others.

Murchison Falls National Park

Lying on the Northwestern side of Uganda, Murchison Falls National Park is the biggest of the existing 10 Parks in this landlocked country. Covering more than 3840sq.km, Murchison Falls National Park is where the world’s powerful falls “Murchison Falls” is found and the park boasts of its huge profusion of wildlife.

Over 76 mammal species, 451 bird species, amphibians, reptiles, floral species and butterflies all exist in this protected area.

Four of the big 5 games live within Murchison Falls National Park (elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards), and these share the habitat with the Rothschild giraffes, Jackson’s hartebeest, oribis, warthogs, hyenas, hippos, crocodiles, and more.

Rwenzori Mountains -Places to visit in Uganda

Queen Elizabeth National Park

For enthusiastic wildlife lovers, Queen Elizabeth National Park should be a must-visit come 2024-2025. This is Uganda’s 2nd biggest park, occupying 1978sq.km, and contains savanna, forest, and aquatic species.

The park’s wildlife species include spotted hyenas, Uganda Kobs, buffaloes, elephants, topis, hippos, chimpanzees, Nile crocodiles, giant forest hogs, waterbucks, lions (tree-climbing lions inclusive –these reside within the Ishasha sector), leopards,

Birds –such as shoebill storks, collared pratincole, swamp nightjars, flamingoes, pied kingfishers, greater swamp warblers, white-winged warblers, papyrus gonoleks, malachite kingfishers, African emerald cuckoos, blue shouldered robin chat, African fin foot, brown illadopsis, red-throated wryneck, sulphur breasted bush shrike, chestnut wattle eye, white-breasted nigro-finch, to mention but a few.

Lake Mburo National Park

This is the most accessible park of the 10 Uganda Parks, taking clients not more than 4 hours to drive from Kampala. Located in Western Uganda, Lake Mburo National Park is a hidden gem destination, containing a huge profusion of antelopes and other mammals, reptiles, and bird species.

The different wildlife of Lake Mburo National Park include reedbucks, hyenas, oribis, leopards, zebras, hippos, elands, impalas, Defassa waterbucks, and 350 bird species.
