Mount Elgon features the world’s biggest volcanic base measuring over 4000sq.km. It is situated right on the Uganda-Kenya border and also considered the oldest volcano, rising at an altitude of 4321m. 7 days/one-full-week is dedicated for you to spark your adventure spirits on this scenic volcano.

Detailed Itinerary: 7 Days Mount Elgon Hike

Day 1: Head off to Mbale city

Early in the morning, leave your respective accommodation in Entebbe and start your 5-6 hour journey to the Eastern side of Uganda. Drive along Kampala-Jinja highway and en-route, the first stopover to be made will be at the Ssezibwa waterfall, a rich cultural and historical site.

After, proceed on a scenic journey while observing the extensive sugarcane plantations on both sides of the road, navigate through Mabira forest and don’t miss the great view of the Source of the Nile River. You will settle for a leisurely lunch in Jinja and continue to check in at the lodge at the base of Mount Elgon or around Mbale city.

Day 2: Set off for your hike to Tutum camp

Today marks the start of your trek and you will cover 2667m, camping at Tutum camp. Set off from your accommodation, connect to Kapkwai Exploration Centre via Sipi and it will be at this point where you will find Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) offices. Come across mountaineering team, porters, and leave with right gear and food supplies. Your trek will lead you up to the Tutum cave camp located at an altitude of 2667m.

Day 3: Hike to Kajeri Camp -3383m

Depart Tutum camp for Kajeri located at an altitude of 3383m. It will be 17km hike and have your snacks plus enough water to keep you fit. The rest of the night will be had at Kajeri Camp.

Day 4: Hike to Mude camp

Start your next phase of hike after breakfast and today, you will be conquering the Mude camp at an altitude of 3500m. The main areas to come across include the Muyembe Cave Camp found along the trail that links the Sasa trail. This will be a long-day hike and may cover 25km but comes with some stopovers to enable you enjoy lunch before you get to Mude camp.

Day 5: Day to get to Wagagai peak 4321m

With your experienced guide, leave Mude camp for Wagagai peak 4321m. It will be an amazing hike as you wind via the beautiful moorland zone and on reaching at the peak, have great time taking pictures and later, descend to Mude camp for relaxation.

Day 6: Descend back to Budadiri

Wake up early and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, then you will have a long day descending down to Budadiri gate. At Budadiri, your driver guide will relocate you up to the lodge or hotel in Mbale city.

Day 7: Return to Entebbe

Have breakfast and after, you may consider visiting the Sipi Waterfalls or drive back to Entebbe. Today brings to an end the 7 Days Mount Elgon hike to Wagagai Peak.
