Mabira Forest is one of the biggest and few surviving natural forests that are left in Uganda. Located in Eastern Uganda along the Kampala-Jinja highway, Mabira Forest occupies 306sq.km and it straddles in Buikwe district.

Gazetted as a forest reserve in 1932, Mabira Forest is one of the oldest forests and home to several endangered species such as grey-cheeked mangabey (Lophocebus Ugandae), the red-tailed monkeys; 218 butterflies, 315 bird species, a variety of tree and plant species, 97 months.

Day 1: Mabira Forest tour

Travel to Jinja- set off from Kampala for Jinja to enjoy your 2 days Mabira & Jinja tour in Uganda. This tour begins with a briefing from your driver guide and after, drive through the Kampala-Jinja highway to Ssezibwa Falls. The Ssezibwa waterfalls are one of the main stopover areas en route to Jinja and you will enjoy the amazing view of the falls, and the stunning vegetation and also look out for interesting birds.

From Ssezibwa Falls, transfer to Mabira Forest where you will embark on a guided nature/forest walk, or zip-lining. On a guided nature walk in Mabira Forest, the likely primates to come across include the grey-cheeked mangabeys, red-tailed monkeys plus birds like hornbills, Cassin’s hawk-eagle, purple throated cuckoo, and great blue turacos.

At Mabira Forest, it is possible to undertake a birding tour as sole activity. There are 315 bird species living in this lush tropical forest alone including Jameson’s wattle eyes, yellow & grey long bills, Nahan’s francolins, purple-throated cuckoo shrikes, black-headed heron, ibis, Tit Hylia, and many others.

From Mabira Forest, continue to Jinja where a short city tour will be enjoyed. This may depend on your arrival time, and the areas of interest include Kyabazinga palace, local markets, the Source of the Nile Museum, and others.

Day 2: Whitewater rafting and return to Kampala

Wake up early and enjoy a leisurely breakfast in the comfort of your lodge in Jinja. After, leave your lodge/hotel for a briefing before setting off for your exciting whitewater rafting adventure. You will have a half-day whitewater rafting adventure taking you through tough rapids and grades. After whitewater rafting, retreat and settle for lunch or opt for other activities like bungee jumping, kayaking, tubing, quad biking, and more, then you transfer back to Kampala/Entebbe.
