Bwindi Records 5 New Baby Mountain Gorillas within 6 months
Did you know that mountain gorillas are among the most endangered species on earth? The Mountain gorilla population remains highly threatened with their survival in the wild still at risk of extinction. An increase in their number in the wild is amazing, the most incredible contribution of conservation efforts.
Remarkably, there is a gorilla baby boom as Bwindi Impenetrable National Park records 5 new baby mountain gorillas within 6 weeks in 2020 alone. By nature, these creatures are a few apes on an earth whose population is slowly increasing in the wild. Fewer than 1063 mountain gorillas currently exist worldwide and only in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
The gorilla baby boom in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park includes the new arrival at the Rushegura gorilla group family, the Buhoma gorilla trekking region. The infant is from Ruterana mother gorilla making 18 members in the Rushegura group and accounts for 5 new births in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest alone in a period of just 6 weeks (approximately 1 month and 14 days). The new birthmarks Ruterana’s 3rd infant. Ruterana mother gorilla was born on Jan, 1st, 2002 and this makes her also 18 years old.
Two (2) baby gorilla births were recorded in Mubare and Oruzongo group families significantly towards the end of July alone-what can be best described as a double blessing in the jungles. In the Mubare group, the newborn gorilla was spotted on 22nd, July 2020 and this was from the female gorilla Nyampazi then in Oruzongo the new arrival was sighted on July 25th, 2020 from Katoto female gorilla. Another baby gorilla was recorded in the Buhoma Uganda area and this was from an adult female gorilla Kibande of the Rushegura gorilla group.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a magnificent Uganda safari park set in the southwestern side of the country, about 8-10 hours’ drive from Kampala and 3-4 hours’ drive from Kigali capital city. The park shelters an estimate of 459 mountain gorillas with 20 groups already habituated for Uganda gorilla trekking safari travelers to explore. There exist 4 major gorilla trekking areas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park; Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo, and Rushaga.
How much is a gorilla permit in Uganda?
Tracking mountain gorillas in any of Bwindi’s 4 regions requires a valid gorilla permit and this costs US dollars 700 if you are a foreign non-resident, US Dollars 600 in case you are a foreign resident, and Ugx 250000 for the East Africa Community citizens. This is obtainable through a reputable ground tour operator or directly via Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).
