RUSHEGURA GORILLA GROUP WELCOMES NEW BABY GORILLA

Rushegura gorilla group welcomes a newborn baby gorilla just after Karungi and also Businza Mother gorillas from Mubare gorilla family also broke the news with newborn baby gorillas early in October and November 2019. The newborn baby gorilla adds onto the population of these endangered apes in the jungles of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park although the sex and name aren’t yet certain. The mother, Mitunu gave birth to newborn baby early this December 2019 a few days after two births that occurred still within the Buhoma region of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The new member now makes Rushegura gorilla group, a family of 16 members.
Previously, the Rushegura group comprised 15 individuals including one silverback, three blackbacks, one sub-adult male, three juveniles, three infants and four adult female mountain gorillas. This gorilla family welcomes its 15th member around 3rd January 2016.

More about Rushegura gorilla group
Rushegura gorilla group is one of the four habituated gorilla families within the Buhoma area of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It is also known as the R. group and it is among a few habituated gorilla groups with many gorillas. It underwent habituation exercise from 2002 and till 2002 when it was opened for visitors on Uganda gorilla safari to trek. Rushegura gorilla family broke away from the Habinyanja family under the leadership of Mwirima silverback. This gorilla family is now under the leadership of Kabukojo silverback and other members include Nyamunwa, Kibande, Katabazi, Kyirinyi, Kalembezi, Nyampazi, Kanywanyi, Mitunu, Kafuruka, Ruterana and many others.

Other gorilla groups to trek in Buhoma region
In addition to the Rushegura group, the Buhoma sector also comprises of other habituated gorilla groups that are open to visitors to trek while on Uganda gorilla safari. they include Katwe the newly habituated group, Mubare family the oldest gorilla group in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Habinyanja group. About 32 gorilla permits are available for booking for visitors intending to trek mountain gorillas in the Buhoma area of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
To obtain a gorilla permit in Uganda for you to trek gorillas in the Buhoma area, you need $600 if you are a foreign non-resident, $500 for foreign residents and shs.250000 for East African residents. However, it should be noted that starting 1st July 2020, the cost of a gorilla permit in Uganda will change to $700 for foreign non-residents, $600 foreign residents and shs.250000 for East African residents. Other gorilla trekking regions in Bwindi National Park
Besides the Buhoma area, you can also visit other gorilla trekking sectors in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. They include Rushaga, Nkuringo in the South and Ruhija area in the East. Each of these sectors has habituated families that offer trekkers with unique gorilla trekking experiences.

Accommodation options in the Buhoma area
There are many lodges and other accommodation options for visitors on Uganda gorilla safari in the Buhoma region to spend a night. They range from budget to luxury and they include; Buhoma Lodge, Mahogany Springs Camp, Volcanoes Safaris Bwindi Lodge (Luxury); Gorilla Mist Camp, Engagi Lodge Bwindi, Lake Kitandara Camp (Mid-range); Broadbill Forest Camp, Buhoma Community Rest Camp, Bwindi View Bandas (Budget).

Getting to Buhoma sector
The Buhoma sector is found in the Northern side of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It is reachable by road or by air. By road, it is 8-10 hours’ drive with your journey beginning from Kampala. From Kigali Rwanda, it is 4 hours’ drive. By air, there are flight services from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield to Kihihi or Kisoro airstrip where you can link to the Buhoma area of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park by road.
