2 Days Lake Mburo Tour: Wildlife, Birding & Boat Safari in Uganda’s Smallest Savannah Park Guide 2026
Overview of the 2 Days Lake Mburo Tour
The 2 Days Lake Mburo Tour is a compact, immersive safari that lets you experience the whisper of the wild in Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda’s smallest savannah national park.
Nestled in western Uganda, between Kampala and Mbarara, this park packs an extraordinary amount of wildlife, birdlife, and landscape diversity into its compact 370 square kilometers.
Lake Mburo National Park is managed as a protected savannah ecosystem and was gazetted as a national park in 1983.
Despite its size, it has become one of Uganda’s richest biodiversity hotspots, hosting over 68 species of mammals, more than 350 bird species, and a wide variety of reptiles spread across its interconnected ecosystems: open savannah, woodlands, forested hills, swamps, and, of course, the Lake Mburo catchment system itself.
For safari enthusiasts, photographers, and first-time visitors to Uganda, the 2 Days Lake Mburo Tour is an ideal short getaway that delivers wildlife, birding, and a relaxing boat cruise without the long travel times of the bigger parks.
You’ll see impalas, zebras, Rothschild giraffes, Defassa waterbucks, buffaloes, elands, olive baboons, warthogs, bushbucks, Nile crocodiles, hippos, Jackson’s hartebeest, Sitatunga, topis, and oribis, among many others.
Birdwatchers will also thrive here, with rare species like the shoebill stork, Coqui francolin, Black‑bellied bustard, Brown‑horned parrots, Pink‑backed pelicans, and Yellow‑breasted apalis, plus a vibrant resident list including African fish eagles, Red‑faced barbets, Emerald‑spotted wood dove, bare‑faced go‑away birds, grey‑crowned cranes, Long‑tailed cisticolas, and Rufous‑bellied herons.
The 2 Days Lake Mburo Tour is designed to be flexible, affordable, and experience‑rich, combining a game drive, boat cruise, and equator experience into a single compact itinerary that fits perfectly between Kampala and the longer savannah or mountain gorilla safaris to the west.

Detailed Itinerary of the 2 Days Lake Mburo Tour
Day 1: Drive from Kampala City to Lake Mburo National Park.
After breakfast from your place of residence in Kampala, you will be picked up by our experienced driver-guide and briefed about your 2 days on the Lake Mburo tour.
Start the journey to the Savannah National Park at 7:30 am (or latest 8:00 am) using the Kampala-Masaka-Mbarara highway.
Your 3-4-hour journey will involve a number of stopovers, one of which is the magical Uganda Equator in Kayabwe, Mpigi district.
While here, expect your breath to be taken away by the interesting water experiment – how water drains in varying directions when placed in different hemispheres and also how you are less heavy (lighter) when standing on the equator.
Continue with the riveting journey traversing through different towns characterised by lush vegetation, vast banana plantations, and locals going about their daily activities.
On reaching Lyantonde Town, you will branch and use the Nshara gate to enter Lake Mburo National Park. Have a short game drive and continue to the safari lodge, where you will have lunch.
After your lunch, you will be driven to the Lakeside, where you will find boats waiting, and head for an afternoon boat cruise on Lake Mburo (the largest lake in this park), where you have chances of spotting the Nile crocodiles, hippos and some impalas as well as buffaloes on the banks. Also, aquatic bird species will be encountered here. Later head back to the lodge for relaxation, dinner, and overnight.
Meal plan: Lunch and dinner.
Accommodation options
- Budget: Leopard Rest Camp or Eagle’s Nest Lodge.

- Up-market: Mihingo Safari Lodge or Mantana Tented Camp.

Day 2: Early morning game drive within the Park and return to Kampala
Morning game drives are best enjoyed if conducted at dawn.
Therefore, for this 2-day Lake Mburo tour, you will be required to wake up as early as 6:00 am for breakfast and then start the drive at 6:30 am.
This is to give you a chance to spot the nocturnal animals such as leopards and hyenas before they return to their hideouts.
Other animals to sight during game viewing are the Defassa waterbucks, elands, impalas, graceful zebras, towering giraffes, buffaloes, and topis, among others.
After the game drive, return to the lodge for a quick snack and a few moments of relaxation as you enjoy your last moments at this small but spectacular savannah national park.
You will have lunch at the Lodge and check out before returning to Kampala and arriving in the evening.
