The wonders of Elgon Mountain – Adventure at its best
Located in the Eastern district of Uganda called Mbale, Mountain Elgon is one of the tourists’ favorite destinations in the country. The beauty and adventure one enjoys while hiking the mountain is exception in that it keeps someone wondering how God created it. Many people especially those who are interested in a lifetime experience find time and visit the mountain not only to have a look at it but also to climb and experience life at the high peaks.

Mt. Elgon is a dormant volcanic mountain and it is on record to have been the leading contributor to the booming agriculture around the neighboring villages due to its fertile soil. The mountain is said to have the largest volcanic base in Africa and this makes it more interesting for tourists especially the hikers. Hiking: There is no doubt that the mountain provides the best atmosphere for hiking. There are demarcated tracks specifically for hiking and these are well situated in that a climber can have a breathtaking view of the neighboring green plantations. This hike come with other interesting activities like cave viewing. There are some caves on the mountain which where homes to the first Bagisu people. They also acted as war caves during the tribal conflicts in the early days. These provide the best cultural experience to the visitors as they get to see how a true African man used to survive.

Bird watching and Nature walks: Climbing to the top of the mountain comes with extra encounters like the birds. There are different bird species which can be spotted around the mountain including those which cannot be found elsewhere.

Cultural Tours: Mt. Elgon is found in Bugisu and the people who stay around it are called the Bagisu commonly referred to as “Bamasaba”. Incase you have never heard of the Imbalu a cultural practice which involves circumcising boys as a way of turning them into men, then this is the tribe of people that carry it out. Therefore on your tour to Mt. Elgon, you can decide to visit the neighboring villages and meet these cultured people and also chat with the elders.
