Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Departure for Akagera National Park

Wake up early in the morning and have a cup of tea or coffee at your respective hotel in Kigali. After, head off to eastern Rwanda to Akagera National Park approximately 2 to 3 hours’ drive from Kigali. Arrive early enough and have enjoyable lunch at a lodge and after, embark on afternoon game viewing where you will look out for varied savanna grassland wildlife dwellers in this park including among others elephants, the Masai giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, impalas, Oribis, birds, topis, leopards, bushbucks a mention but a few. After, return to the lodge for rest, dinner and overnight stay at Dereva Hotel (Budget), Akagera Game Lodge (Midrange) or Ruzizi Tented Lodge/Magashi Luxury Tented Camp (Luxury).

Day 2: Game drive and boat cruise in Akagera National Park

Start your day with a delicious breakfast and after embark on morning game drive to the lush savanna grasslands of Akagera National Park. This is a half day game drive and it is a great opportunity for you to spot out different wild animals including elephants, Masai giraffes, gazelles, Oribis, Burchell’s zebras, leopards, impalas, bushbucks, topis, buffaloes, birds a mention but a few. After exciting moments with these incredible savanna grassland dwellers, return to the lodge to have some rest and lunch. Later, set off for afternoon boat ride via Lake Ihema. While on a boat ride, you will have a chance to catch a glimpse at varied wildlife species including several crocodiles, hippos, bird species like shoebill storks and others. Return to the lodge for relaxation, dinner and overnight stay at Dereva Hotel (Budget), Akagera Game Lodge (Midrange) or Ruzizi Tented Lodge/Magashi Luxury Tented Camp (Luxury).

Day 3: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Get up early in the morning and have breakfast at your lodge in Akagera National Park. After, check out ready to embark on a journey to Volcanoes National Park home to a section of about 1004 mountain gorillas that are left on earth today. On arrival, check in at for dinner and overnight stay at Bisate Lodge/Virunga Lodge/Mountain Gorilla View Lodge (Luxury), Kinigi Guesthouse (Budget) or Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge/Da Vinci Gorilla Lodge (Mid0-range).

Day 4: Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Your day begins with breakfast and after, gather at Volcanoes National Park headquarters-Kinigi for early morning briefing by one of the park officials who will take you through some of the dos and don’ts that you have to follow while in search for the rare mountain gorillas. On this day, you need to have your packed lunch/snacks and water as the trek may last you about 2 to 8 hours depending on your hiking speed, the location of these creatures and nature of the habitat. You will be assigned to only 1 habituated gorilla group to track in a group of 8 visitors and park guide will be allocated to take you through your primate adventure. Once you bump into a group of these unique primate species, you have an hour of magical encounter and for you to also explore more about their behaviors, body gestures and opportunity for you to take as many photos as possible. After your magical encounters, return to the lodge for relaxation and in the evening, you can head off to the most picturesque twin Lakes of Bulera and Ruhondo if time allows or simply relax and have overnight stay at Bisate Lodge/Virunga Lodge/Mountain Gorilla View Lodge (Luxury), Kinigi Guesthouse (Budget) or Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge/Da Vinci Gorilla Lodge (Mid0-range).

Day 5: Drive back to Kigali

After breakfast early in the morning, set off to the park headquarters for a briefing on the set rules and regulations for golden monkey tracking. Later, return to the lodge to have lunch and then check out ready to embark on a return journey to Kigali. This marks the end of your 5 days Rwanda gorilla and wildlife safari.
